The Focus of IT Enquirer
The publishing workflow entails a lot more than just the layout of pages and outputting them to the printer. In the 21st century, publishing is a cross-media operation in which the workflow starts with multimedia and ends with an output format that can be a paper print, a video, or an online page --be it web, PDA, RSS feed, or anything in-between.
Until the web era started, publishers could define themselves as people or companies that delivered printed matter to an audience. The content of the printed matter was to be written by authors and in some cases was to be illustrated, usually by means of photos, rarely by means of cartoon or drawn illustration. “Publisher” was the name we reserved for those people who were busy with printed output. Other publishing channels were named likewise: broadcasters for video content, moviemakers for movies, etc.
Today, publishers will push content into ‘the market’ using all the channels they have at their disposal: print, web, RSS, video, audio, etc. The consequence of this evolution has been that publishing today involves 3 to 5 disciplines --ranging from layout, web coding, and printed output to video editing and Flash coding. To have a deep knowledge of all these fields of expertise is almost impossible.
IT Enquirer is a pan-European publication. IT Enquirer has got to the point to which it is known as a key industry influencer, covering issues that will help cross-media publishers to decide which products in layout and design, video and photography, and production they should buy.
Publisher and Staff
IT Enquirer publishes background articles, reviews and reports for the cross-media publishing industry. In 2008, we started conducting market and technology research, and we started offering multimedia training packs for complex technologies, workflows and products, such as Quark Job Jackets and Ghent WorkGroup InDesign workflow setups.
Throughout 2008, IT Enquirer will evolve from an online magazine to a provider of business intelligence and services to its target markets.
IT Enquirer is designed and maintained by an experienced IT-journalist and consultant, Erik Vlietinck, an ex-lecturer of IT Law. Erik has over 12 years of experience writing for European IT-magazines, such as Belgian Datanews and EOS Magazine, Dutch Publish, Computable, Windows 2000 Magazine and Wireless Computing Magazine, P/F Kunstbeeld (a professional photographer’s magazine), and British IT Week, New Media Age, MacFormat, Computer Arts, PC Advisor, and Total Content and Media.
Erik contributed to the above mentioned magazines on topics such as enterprise document publishing, colour management, and printing. During the past 12 years, he also advised software and hardware companies in the publishing and printing industries on the publication of manuals and technical content. Among his clients were companies such as Document Management Partners, Ricoh Europe, Hewlett-Packard, WoodWing Software, and Unisys. Prior to becoming a journalist and editor, Erik was a contract lawyer and a consultant for large IT-Enterprises and IT-departments of multinationals in Europe.
